Archaeologists from Jagiellonian University , Kraków , have discovered astronomical carvings and painting made by the Pueblo civilisation , one of the most advanced pre - Columbian societies in America .
The ancient Puebloans , also known as the Ancestral Pueblos , first emerged at the origin of the cultivation era and survive until around 1600 CE in the region that spans modern Utah and section of Arizona , New Mexico , and Colorado . The civilisation is have a go at it for its multi - story stone household ( called “ pueblos ” from which their name is derived ) , rock music artwork , ornate jewellery , and painted ceramics .

The Modern findings get along from the Castle Rock Pueblo settlement complex , located on the Mesa Verde plateau , on the border between Colorado and Utah . These areas have become popular with archaeologists and tourists alike because they are plate to famous pre - Columbian settlements that were establish into cave niche or carve into the canyon bulwark . They also control rock art that dates back just less than 3,000 years ago .
Based on local report , archaeologist started explore surface area of the typically harder - to - orbit cliffs , especially within the Sand Canyon , Graveyard Canyon , and Rock Creek Canyon web site in the colonization composite .
It seems there were many previously strange petroglyphs hidden in inaccessible place about 800 meters ( 2,624 feet ) above the drop-off settlements . Amazingly , the rock venire lead over 4 km ( 2.48 mi ) around the tableland .
On them , the Ancestral Pueblos had carved 1meter blanket ( 3.28 feet ) whorled carvings that were used for astronomical observation and to record the engagement of some limited days in the calendar , such as the summertime and wintertime solstice and the spring and fall equinoxes .
“ These discoveries forced us to set our knowledge about this area ” Professor Radosław Palonka , an archeologist at Jagiellonian University explained in astatement .
“ Definitely we have underestimated the number of inhabitants who lived here in the 13th century and the complexity of their religious pattern , which must have also have place next to these outdoor panels . ”
In increase to these spirals , the squad discovered carvings of warriors and shamans which in all likelihood date to around the 3rdcentury CE , in what is bear on to as theBasketmaker Era .
Most Puebloan petroglyph were created between the 12thand 13thcentury CE , and germinate to include complicated geometrical build and later whole narratives showing hunting scenes . Then when the Spanish arrived in America , horses appeared in carvings for the first meter – as these animals were unknown to Native North Americans before this after disappearing from the continent during the last Ice Age .
This research would not have been possible without the support of local communities who helped the Polish archaeologists give away these amazing carvings .
“ Members of the native kindred are keenly concerned in the history of their ancestor and have repeatedly help [ our ] researchers in understanding the iconography , rock artistic creation , and the function of some buildings , ” Jagiellonian University explained .
