Netflix , Vudu , Unbox and Apple tv set may be around , but if there ’s one name in rentals that can take streaming mainstream , it ’s Blockbuster . unluckily , their first endeavor at a stream media box descend short .
The Pitch
You grease one’s palms the $ 99 box , build bybroadband gear maker 2Wire , and you may stream Blockbuster rentals to your idiot box . After your first 25 spare rentals , you pay whatever titles are tick . ( Star Wars : The Clone Wars was $ 3.99 plus tax . Whatever unlimited package you may have with Blockbuster DVD rentals does not apply . ) All flick are downloaded to the system . The downloads do expire within the 24 hours you begin watching , but movies can also be purchase . Blockbuster has about 2200 claim available at the instant and the new release section leaves something to be desired with big , not - too - late films like Iron Man still miss . Of the 2,200 or so picture show and tv appearance , I found 10 HD titles on the system .
The Hardware
My initial impressions of the 2Wire hardware are largely convinced . The box seat is small , promiscuous , run cool and pile a smart ( though handicapped ) SD expansion expansion slot on top of the 8 GB of national storage . The bundled remote is decidedly a shade too minor , and it ’s covered with those multicolored “ we have n’t totally thought this through so we leave some room to fudge ” buttons . More on that in a moment .
Setup

After plug it in , you wait a few minute and go through a quick 5 - step process that requires you to synchronise a Blockbuster score with a indiscriminately generated corner serial number . The Interface

But nothing else in the system is get out to right menu based .
I realise this sounds petty , but take a few minutes navigating the organisation and you realize that the UI ’s formula typeset miss introductory coherency .

Once you get to whatever you ’d like to watch , the experience is still a bit bumpy . Previewing seems promise , but it convey place in a minuscule box that ’s close to worthless . And when you choose to download the movie ( yes , it ’s physically downloaded / save to the unit ) , you do n’t just go to viewing the motion picture . You have to incur the movie again in “ My Movies . ” Then you choose it . Then you check it .
Here ’s the catch , though . you may watch the pic nearly instantly ( Coyote State in seconds , HD in minutes ) . But you ca n’t rewind or tight onward until the intact film download to your system . Also , if you stop watching a movie before it downloads , there ’s no choice to restart . You start over . frustrative . Once the download is complete , FF and RW work very fluidly , as does resuming . Vudu , which costs a spate more , give way you fluid pilotage even when downloading .
Most television is promise to be DVD quality . It falls quite a number short to my optic , though the framerates are generally fluid . Overall , the South Dakota viewing quality reminds me a set of Amazon Unbox . I feel like I ’ve seen skillful non - HD tone on Netflix — though I ’ve had somewhat mixed result on each chopine , honestly . Vudu may still dominate in the SD - quality department .
As for HD , it ’s a superb disappointment . The 40 - arcminute IMAX movie mahimahi took about 20 minutes to memory cache ( that may be my connection ’s fault ) . But when it did play , the quality was not only very pitiful ( upconverted DVD , I ’d say ) but the playback was often choppy , constantly jittering to a stop . Why did these slowdowns happen ? The media was already on my arrangement ! Both Netflix and Vudu HD be adrift the Blockbuster unit out in HD timbre and functioning .
Conclusions
perhaps the literal misapprehension of this loge is that it ’s trying to cater to the less tech friendly , and in doing so , becomes very muddled in its introduction . Netflix has been very smart to force its users to choose downloads online . With a few fast-growing firmware update and the correct rental program from Blockbuster , I might be willing to revisit the choice . But until then , it ’s a Blockbuster product in name only .
