Acinonyx jubatus have solid disgraceful round / oval spots and calamitous " tear lines" that run from the quoin of their eyes down the sides of their nose to their mouth ( the lines keep sunlight out of the cheetahs ' middle while hunt ) . They ’re also lankier than rest of the big cats and have smaller jaws and longer can . They trace during the solar day and rely on volley of speed ( up to 75 mph over short space ) . When walk and running , they pace , go their two left legs and then their two good legs . Unlike leopard and other big cats , they can purr while they inhale , but ca n’t howl .

Leopards have more complex catching figure of clusters of black and brown spots which look like roses , called rosettes . This convention simulates shifting plant and fantasm , providing camoflage as the leopards stalk their prey from tall grass and underbrush . Leopards in easterly Africa have circular rosettes , while their southerly African brethren have straight rosettes . Leopards are also noticeably bulkier looking than cheetahs . They ’re not build for pep pill , but surprise attacks . The excess strength helps leopards drag their prey up tree , where hide the kill to flow on at their leisure time . Leopards walk using their leg in diagonal pairs ( i.e. left front and correctly back leg , then right front and left back leg ) . Like the sleep of the boastful big cat , leopards can roar but ca n’t purr except while they ’re exhaling .
