Andy Wilson , from Microsoft Research , has created a pretty impressive new way to interact with your computer , using very canonical equipment and some very smart software coding . He ’s managed to use a standard webcam ( “ like $ 30 , ” he says ) and customs duty software package to get the River Cam to recognize the shapes and campaign of only his hand . It ’s a bit like theWiimote hack , but already working with programs like Google Earth . The webcam is trained to divide the foreground ( hands ) from the background signal ( in this case , Andy ’s keyboard ) , which makes it much easier to identify unlike shapes made by his digit . He can then move the cursor , click , and habituate two hand to perform more complex motions like load and pull . He does n’t get into too much contingent , part because he has to constantly cue whoever ’s filming that no , this is n’t charming , and no , there is n’t a small somebody under his desk secretly cook the pointer move on the screen . The demo is really impressive for how simple Andy clear it all seem , and it ’d be capital to see what else he can do from this home . [ MAKE ]
