Last month io9 went to Disney ’s Barsoom , with a prowler peek edit - alcove visit . Stanton showed us footage of the leather - strapped Taylor Kitsch ( John Carter ) struggling with Mars ’ gravity . We ogle the four arms of the warrior clan of Tharks , and Carter ’s pet Woola ! And here ’s what we read about Disney ’s huge Martian dangerous undertaking movie .

Especially when it ’s being helm by a theater director who ( while clear glorious ) has never directed a resilient - action feature film . We scan and analyzed every still , each slice of concept artwork , we even try Matai Shang ( Mark Strong ) ’s robes ( which were kind of a delightful reading of the Necromongers race ’s artistic from Chronicles of Riddick with a Jedi sleeve ) and here are some things we learned about :
The Tharks
The biggest surprise out of the edit - Laurus nobilis sojourn was the reveal of the 9 - foot grandiloquent , four - armed alien creature that also inhabit the red humankind of Barsoom , The Tharks . I ’ve always reckon these Martians to be a mo more like giant dirt ball with unfeeling hemipterous insect - eyes . Not the case here . Stanton and squad figured out a way to humanize the stranger , thus yield this exotic species the power to emote . As you’re able to see in this little touch of a photograph here , the creatures are slender but they ’re rocking the leather shoulder strap costume that is the uniform of Barsoom .
But , as a result of making them a mo lankier , the whole globe feels a lot less like something you ’d paint on the side of your van , and much more tangible . “ Because they nab you , ” Stanton explain . “ We had all these center colors . Fortunately , Defoe is getting so defined and wrinklely so there is a quite a little of Defoe in that face so it understand really well . ” Here ’s a bit more from Stanton on creating the Tharks .
Tharks are 9 - substructure to 10 - foot tall green aliens with four arms and tusk . They ’re all CG , so I went with my Pixar gut and experience , and have actor because of their eye , their vocalism , and their acting power . What other beasts from the Edgar Rice Burroughs work are in the film ?
John Carter is n’t all Thoat - bait Tharks ( which would still pretty awing , even if it was ) . ERB was a machine when it came to creating alien beasties and Disney had a wad monster to make in society to make this worldly concern come to inhabit . Creature animator Eamonn Butler [ pictured here ] ingest us through a collection of concept art and animal drawings and introduced us to Woola ( Carter ’s Martian cur ! ) .

And I only got to see that White Ape for a few minute , but it just felt real . There was a system of weights to the gargantuan beast .
lamentably , there are no giant lion Banths in this product , but great deal of sabertooth Banth skull strewn about for the lancinate center . Fingers crossed the next film will have some giant Martian cats !
What will Mars count like ?
Very little time was spent with the Zodangas and Heliumates tribes ( the android living on Mars ) but I did get to see each tribe ’s armor ( channeling a whole lotta Tim Burton ’s Planet of the Apes ) and watched a quick exchange between Princess Dejah and Carter in one of her more elaborate getting - ready rooms . Their exchange was intense , but little could be really reveal as it was one of the first time we saw these two together and already drama was flying . Stanton explained that Petra in Jordan was an monolithic inspiration for the macrocosm on Mars .

No . They will , however , be run around in just - as - aphrodisiacal leather dresser plates , and elaborate read/write head dresses and course Middle Eastern garb ( specifically for Dejah ) . But no , this will not calculate like a heavy metallic element record album cover , sorry . But trust me , everyone looks really darn dependable . Although I was curious to see if Stanton would require a little reality in his Martian movie . Not everyone can be an airbrushed chiseled brick theatre , so are there heavy Martians in this picture show ?
There actually are , but we cut them . We got a lot of half - nude be given around . We ’re not going to make them see awful . I await at a lot of desert - dwelling multitude and they are very effective and very lean and have been beat by the sun and I just kind of want the Masai warriors and the Aborigines . We worked really hard on the physicality . If you travel enough , you will see things that you have never see anything before . That ’s just nature develop that fashion . We all felt that it was all naturally evolved through nature for those reasons . So that every matter grown up would have a more rude basis .
Are any threads from the second book ?
Yes ! Matai Shang leader of the Holy Therns will be making an former appearing in this movie !
