We knew going in thatRian Johnson would provide some storey element for Claudia Gray ’s latest Leia - centric novel , but over the weekend Lucasfilm Story Group executive Pablo Hidalgo confirm just what Johnson added — and it gives us a hint to some of the story elements we ’ll likely see pick up in Episode VIII :

In the novel , set just six years before The Force Awakens , the New Republic has become deadlocked and highly ineffective as it splits into two ideologic factions : Populists , who want to see New Republic establishment shared out among penis planet , and Centrists , who believe in a centralised government back by a powerful military . finally , a big figure of the Centrist faction officially secedes from the New Republic , joining up with Imperial remnants hide out in the far fling reaches of blank to make the First Order . ( The “ table napkin incident , ” by the agency , isan character assassination attempt on Leia and a mathematical group of senators . )

Although this might just be backstory provided for Gray ’s novel , considering it came directly from Johnson , there ’s a decent chance that the Senate ( or what ’s leave of it after Starkiller Base turned the Hosnian System into intergalactic dust ) and these other faction will recreate major part in Episode VIII .
Hidalgo also let on something interesting about the book ’s bounteous reveal , namely Leia ’s “ outing ” as the girl of Darth Vader , which almost altogether destroy her reputation as a Senator , and leads to her empty politics to create the Resistance . It was almost an inspire shortstop to be released before The Force Awakens , before it became part of stemma :
