Hifiman are well respected in the audiophile space for their headphones , amplifier and portable music players . Their late phone is the HE-400 , an entry - horizontal surface iteration of their cans driven by planar magnetized guts . sit on the show trading floor of CES , I eventually got a probability to hear these in activeness , and I like them .
The HE-400s have an open design , so it was elusive to get a full gauge of the tone on the cerium floor , but even with that look at the HE-400s were impressive . The headphones are comfortable , solidly constructed , and have audiophile - tier sound recording connexion , which are always nice . As for speech sound , Not only did the nothingness tracks have layers and and a all-encompassing soundstage , but hip - hop and electronic tracks have bass . This , of course , is because the planar magnetized drivers have a bigger diaphragm than dynamic and electrostatic driver , which allows for both truth and low end reply . And with an efficiency / sensitivity of 93db , the Hifiman pronounce the HE-400 ’s are powerful enough to be push by an iPhone or iPod . While this is straight , audio occur from my iPhone was unsurprisingly quieter , even at max bulk , and if you ’re in a noisy place , it ’s not quite flash enough .
But that said , these are a very exciting offering because it brings a high - final stage technology at a price point in time that is at least approachable , if not entirely meretricious . I ’m looking forward to spend more time with these , but for now , I suppose we should all be excited , if nothing else .
