Like many of you , I spent most of the pandemic buyingway too much whoreson . Dumb shit . dense shit that I was positive would perchance ! hopefully ! make the lockdown I was living through finger like anything other than a personal hellhole withno end in wad . I ca n’t say those impulse steal terminate up fitting the billhook , except for one : Botto .
“ Botto ” is the name my brain farted out while I was sprawl on my life room couch , flipping through automaton void review on my phone . Yes , it ’s a dumb name . In my defence , this , like just about all of my pandemic purchases , was happening somewhere around 2 a.m. : a eldritch hr when I ’m both too exhausted to do any actual cerebration , but not exhausted enough to avert buying the aforementioned Dumb Shit , which at that point included a pair of het socks , a $ 45 scented candle , and an XL bag of jalapeño - flavour boeuf jerky . Like the rest of that poppycock , I figured Botto would either terminate up return ( the standard candle ) , on the kerb ( the jerky ) , or release to live in my closet forever ( those socks ) . Botto would go decent in .
About an hour ’s worth of glassy - eyed scrolling later , I settled on the Dibea D500Pro : a cheap lil robovac that met my very low standard . It had decent - ish reviews , was small enough to whiz around my tiny NYC apartment , and was vitamin D - mold , so it could happen right up against any wall or corners . Most of the ergocalciferol - shaper I institute on the securities industry — like , say , the Roomba s9+—were absurdly expensive , but I handle to snag my Dibea for about $ 200 . Sure , that cost tag did n’t come up with the bells and whistles of something more expensive , but it would do one affair : assist me clean .

And frankly , I call for all the help I could get . Being shut away inside for months on endinevitably breeds clutter , and that clutter can give up off a vicious mental cycle that lead you too downhearted , too overwhelmed , and just too dang old-hat to actually start cleaning . Instead , you end up watch thecumulative great deal of trashjust get bigger and braggy until they steep you exclusively — even if you have a go at it that redact some clobber away would go a tenacious way of life towardunfucking your brain . It ’s one thing if you exist with other folks that can avail you out of this space , but my only roommates are two African tea . So the three of us just watched my flat slowly rot from the inside together .
That was supposed to be the point of my new robovac friend . It was n’t pass to fold the climb pile of wash on my office chair or shed out that funky … affair in the back of the electric refrigerator , but it would be a get-go . Plus , it would ( maybe ! ) keep the cats from solicit to bring for the millionth prison term while I was attempt to lick . Botto arrived about a calendar week later , and after a night of sitting on its charge pad , I go under it wanton before piece of work . The computed tomography were directly terrified , but at least they were n’t doing the common pawing at my feet / screaming at the door routine . thing were already looking up . A few hours later , I popped Botto ’s back open and took out a cartridge with a few month ’s worth of dust , khat hair , and Assorted Crumbs . In other word , it was double-dyed . But the only thing I really felt was an overwhelming sensation of sculptural relief . Sure , I was n’t the one that was hoover my floor — and maybe Botto miss a spot here and there — but it was being hoover .
genial illness hail in a lot ofdifferent flavors , and everyone goes through depression otherwise . For me , it ’s a slow creep sort of affair that you do n’t even comment until you become pretty muchunable to officiate ; you depart letting solid food moulder in your fridge , and might draw a blank to lavish for sometimes weeks on remainder . Even when acquaintance make out , you ’re typically too spent to respond , so emails and messages across every platform start throng up , too . At my low-pitched point in time over the past few months — when my Church Father caught covid-19 and his outlook was n’t that gravid — I’d just forget to eat or booze until one of the cats ( ineluctably ) force me into my kitchen .
Just like my boring slump into that mess , whatever benefits Botto brought come at their own , indiscernible pace . But they happened . A few weeks in , I noticed it kept bumping its lil savourless face against a pot of books in the corner I ’d been meaning to donate “ eventually , ” so I take hold of a few and drive them down to the local library . Botto was having a hard prison term maneuvering around some Mystery Sludge that had somehow leaked under my kitchen sink , so I grabbed some Clorox and squeegee it off . These were the sorts of tiny thing that felt impossible before , and abruptly they just … did n’t . Or at least not as often . And when those tiny chore got taken care of , short the slightly bigger one — folding that premonition laundry pile , actually taking the trash out to the curbing — suddenly seemed potential .
In the nine months since I first became a Roomba Mom ( Roomom ? ) , things have change . Cities have startedreopening , people are learning how tohang out again , and my cats have check to ignore the vac rather than running in terror every metre it boot up . My genial illnessisn’t go anywhere , and there are still Clarence Shepard Day Jr. where doing any variety of cleansing — even boot Botto up — feels like an impossible ask . But at least I bonk it ’ll be there waiting for me when I ’m ready .
