“He’s my best friend. He’s my best friend. We have inside jokes now. We have rapport,” he tells PEOPLE about being a dad to Riley — something he says is “the best thing in the world,” and gives him “purpose.”

The toddler — who Fisher andwife Ellie Fisher,25,welcomed in June 2022— recently hit the big milestone of taking his first steps. However, like all toddlers, he still needs a little help from his mom and dad.

“He can walk now. He can run even. But he chooses not to unless he’s holding my finger,” the star explains. “So if he’s not, even with my arm slack and him just kind of holding it and not even using it. If he lets go, he immediately goes down.”

As for Riley’s future, Fisher says he’ll support his son on any path he takes.

“I want him and all of our future kids to do whatever they feel called to, whatever that passion is,” he tells PEOPLE. “I understand passion and I’m going to do everything that I can the same way that my wife is. We are going to do everything that we can do with our kids, with opportunity to try, opportunity to search, opportunity to reach, opportunity to fail, opportunity to succeed in whatever it is that they’re doing.”

“So we’ll see what [Riley] gets into, but we’re down for the ride,” says Fisher, who finished his run in Broadway’sSweeney Toddrevival in June 2023.

Back in April, Fisher spoke to PEOPLE about setting boundaries in his career toprotect his time with his wife and son.

“I have a rule of, if a trip [is] over two weeks, my family’s going to come with me,” he explained. “We’re going to figure that out, however that works, if it’s a paperwork thing or if that’s … whatever that is.”

Ahead of Riley’s arrival,Fisher told PEOPLE he and Ellie “dreamt for years"about what parenthood would be like. “We laugh all the time and we’re like, ‘Man, having kids is going to be fun’ because it’s going to just be an addition. We’re just going to have more people join our little party,” he said at the time.
